Last year marked the centenary of the birth of the world famous 'Rosary Priest' Fr Patrick Peyton, who was born in Co Mayo in 1909 and who died, aged 82, in 1992.

In 1945, with World War 2 at it's final stages Fr Peyton invited Bing Crosby, together with the family of the five Sullivan brothers, who had died together in the war, to join him on live radio for peace. Over the following four decades he promoted his prayer crusade across the globe through radio, television and rallies, assisted by some of the major Hollywood stars of the time.

To mark the centenary, the Beara Historical Society has invited a former colleague and close friend of Fr Peyton, Fr Steve Gibson, to give a talk on the remarkable man from a small farm in Mayo. Fr Gibson is attached to the Fr Peyton Memorial Centre in Attymass. He worked for 34 years at the University of Notre Dame and before that he taught for eight years in Idi Amin's Uganda.

This talk was originally scheduled for January last but the snows prevented Fr Gibson from travelling the long journey from Mayo. This most interesting talk will be held at Toomey's Lounge Bar on Thursday 27th of May at 8.30pm, and admission, as usual, is free.
