BEARA HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S TALKS DURING 2009

 

 

JANUARY

 

The last meeting of Beara Historical Society was on Monday 19th January 2009 in Twomey’s Lounge Bar, Castletownbere.

Michael Power, Brandy Hall and Dublin gave to a large gathering of the Society a most enlightening talk on Emigration to the United States from Berehaven to Ellis Island 1830-1930’

FEBRUARY

The next meeting is on Monday 25th February in Twomey’s Lounge Bar at 8.30 pm. Michael O’Connell, U.C.C. will speak on: Emigration from the Allihies Copper Mining District to the United States of America, 1840-1900.

 

MARCH

 

The last meeting of Beara Historical Society was in Twomey’s Lounge on Monday 2nd March at 8.30 pm.

 

Vince Harrington of Gour, Castletownbere spoke on: -

 

 Pulleen, its lakes, harbour and the connection to the Puxley family. He also told stories from his father and grandfather about copper mining and seine fishing for mackerel in Allihies.

 

 

The next meeting of Beara Historical Society will be in Twomey’s Lounge Bar on Easter Monday 24th March at 8.30 pm. The speaker will be Dr. Liam Downey, who is already well known to most members. Following research for an article he is about to publish, the topic for his presentation will be Farming before the Great Famine with particular reference to Beara.

Note the change to Monday because of another event on Tuesday night

 

APRIL

Liam Downey will give the next talk in Twomey’s Lounge Bar on Monday 13th April at 8.30 pm. His topic is:

Farming in the pre and post Great Famine Period (1840s) including the important role of women.

 

MAY

In conjunction with Allihies Mining Museum, Beara Historical Society is fortunate to have arranged a visit from Professor William H. Mulligan, Jr., Fulbright Scholar in History, U.C.C. on Monday 4th May

That evening he gave a lecture entitled:

‘From Beara to Keweenaw: Irish Miners in the Michigan Copper Country, 1845-1920’

Venue: Allihies Mining Museum, Monday 4th May 2009 at 8.30 pm.

 

William H. Mulligan, Jr. is Professor of History at Murray State University in Kentucky.  During the spring term 2009, he is a Fulbright Scholar in history at UCC. He is the author or editor of eight books and numerous articles, reviews, encyclopedia entries, and conference papers on American social and industrial history.  He is co-moderator of the Irish Diaspora discussion list and migration studies editor of New Hibernia Review.

 

His current research is on migration from copper mining areas in Ireland, especially the Beara Peninsula, to the Michigan Copper Country and has appeared in New Hibernia Review, Tipperary Historical Journal, Radharc, the Journal of the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland, ABEI Journal (Brazilian Association for Irish Studies) and a number of anthologies.

 

In 2006, he delivered the Ernie O’Malley Memorial Lecture at New York University and in 2007 the DeSantis Lecture at the University of Notre Dame. In May 2005 he received the Murray State University Board of Regents Award for Teaching Excellence and in April 2007, the MSU College of Humanities and Fine Arts Award for Scholarship and Creative Activity.
