Beara Historical Society

Discussion Forum and Heritage Photosite

Important Notice for all the Members of BHS Photo-Archives

Friday 26th November 2010

We have recently moved the Beara Historical Society’s Web and Photo sites to a new Hosting Provider who operates Servers on a Linux rather than Windows Platform.

Unfortunately this has caused several problems with both our Website and the Heritage Photosite. It appears that the title of a photo in the form: (ie: beara.jpg or beara_23.jpg is fine) but Photos in the form of: Beara.jpg, Beara-Adrigole, crooha.jpg, or Jimmy-OHarrington; with Children-at-Castletownbere-Summer.jpg won’t display the photo on a Linux system, also for some reason all our Members accounts were deleted.

We ask all Members not notified by Email to please Re-Register their Accounts.

We have changed as many photo titles as possible, however there are still a good few that won’t display, so if you would please be so kind as to check your own Photo Galleries and see which photos aren’t displaying and upload these to your new account.

NOTE: ALL PHOTOS MUST HAVE JPEG OR JPG EXTENSIONS. BMP IMAGES CAN NO LONGER BE UPLOADED.

Please remember before re-uploading any missing photos to change their titles to a form of preferably not more than 9 characters, numerals or a mixture of both and making sure NOT TO USE ANY CAPITAL LETTERS AND ONLY USE UNDERSCORES AS SEPARATORS BETWEEN WORDS.  (img1124.jpg would be fine, however IMG1124.jpg doesn’t appear to  work.

If you have any difficulties Registering your new account, Uploading Photos or any other problems; please feel free to contact our webmaster, John at: webmaster@bhs.ie

We have now completed updating the BHS website and have taken the opportunity to add several new pages.

If you find any errors or would like to suggest any improvements, additions, etc, please Email to: webmaster@bhs.ie

Alternately, write to:

Beara Historical Society.

Bank Place, Castletownbere, Co. Cork, Ireland.

The Committee of Beara Historical Society apologises for these unforeseen problems especially since the sole reason for moving Hosting Providers was to ensure the continuing integrity of the site by using an Irish Owned and Based Host.

On a brighter note, we have created a heritage/genealogy forum at: http://www.bhs.ie/forum to coincide with the Society’s 25th anniversary and took the opportunity to also create a new Heritage PhotoSite from scratch at www.bhs.ie/heritage which will replace www.bhs.ie/coppermine and is bridged to our new Forum; Members are automatically registered into both sites with the same User Name and password when they Login to the Discussion Forum. (You may find it necessary to refresh your browser to access the new Photosite after login to the Forum)

The new PhotoSite will take some time to repopulate with all the descriptions for the Society’s photos, so please accept our apologies for this inconvenience. We have recreated your Categories Albums in the new Photosite and modified photo titles and file type where necessary before uploading all your photos into them; unfortunately you will have to add your captions and descriptions again.

We are hoping this discussion board will compliment the Beara Roots List, being another place where members can exchange information and news on anything and everything relating to the Beara Peninsula and its families, but in a broader and more generalised fashion; Members will find posting and replying to messages easy using the built in word processer which has many text formatting functions along with a basic spellchecker.

Other aspects of this Forum are the ability for Members to exchange private messages between themselves and along with other features due to be added shortly, will be the facility to create your own Family Blog within the Forum.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR JOINING THE DISCUSSION FORUM AND UPLOADING YOUR PHOTOS

To join our Forum and Photosite, first register by clicking this link: - www.bhs.ie/forum then click on the ‘Register’ button at the top of the page that appears, and follow the instructions.

Please take the time when registering to add a little about yourself, connections to Beara and to which Society, Forum or School you belong. This will help others to recognise relatives and stop outsiders from trying to use our resource as a way to promote commercial gain.

You will also be automatically registered as a member to our Heritage PhotoSite.

To Upload your photos: - Go to www.bhs.ie/heritage (You may find it necessary to refresh your browser to access the new Photosite after login to the Forum)

First decide if you want to add new Albums by clicking the tab marked CREATE / ORDER MY ALBUMS.

UPLOADING A PHOTO OR PHOTOS: click on the ORANGE TRIANGLE at top of screen. This will open a drop down box where you will find a tab marked UPLOAD FILE. Click this then in the following box, select ALBUM to choose which album to upload your photos to, then click BROWSE tab to navigate to where your photos are stored in your computer. You can also upload multiple photos at once. When all your photos are uploaded click CONTINUE to add descriptions to images.

We would ask the members to only upload photos or writings directly connected with Beara: - i.e. photos of the peninsula or relatives and friends, photos by preference to be over 20 years old.

When Adding descriptions or comments to photographs, please don't include a website address/link as these seem to be affecting the Society’s position in search engines. Remember we are an entirely voluntary organisation and removing them is beginning to take up a lot of time.

(Postcards, or articles and photos taken from newspapers or books, should be over 70 years old so as not to infringe Copyright)

If you have problems uploading your photos feel free to contact the society or Email them to info@bhs.ie and we will upload them for you. Please add a description for each image, i.e. names of people, family nickname, townland, approximate date, place taken, etc. Don’t worry if you only have a part of this information, maybe others will be able to fill in some details, the important thing is for us to get as many photos as possible online and build up a photographic record of our extended Beara family for future generations.
